The actor Christian Bale, 34, has been arrested for assaulting his mother.
His mother Jenny, 61, and sister Sharon, 40, are said to have gone to a police station in Hampshire to make the claim, which was subsequently referred to the Metropolitan police.
Bale, in London to attend the European premiere of superhero blockbuster The Dark Knight last night, was apprehended by police at the Dorchester hotel, where the incident is thought to have taken place on Sunday night.
A Met spokesman said: “A 34-year-old man attended a London police station on Tuesday by appointment and was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault. He currently remains in custody.”
It is understood that although the police were aware of allegations on Monday, they allowed the actor to attend four press conference and the evening premiere of The Dark Knight in Leicester square.
The Dark Knight has already been the recipient of increased publicity after the untimely death of Heath Ledger, who plays Batman’s arch nemesis The Joker. This latest real-life drama looks likely to amplify the buzz still further.
